Exclamation Battery Charging?

i'm charging my car battery here at work (nothing like the graveyard shift). the needle keeps jumping from dead to 12, wiggles, then goes back to 0. it does this about every 7 seconds. what does that mean!? should i disconnect the battery? is it fine? i don't wamt it to sit outside all night while i'm in the hotel, should i just disconnect it and keep it here at the desk in the warm?
