| Just a question. I've been reluctant to really beat the snot out of the car because of something the previous owner told me. When you've got the automatic transmission, it's bad for it if you "shift it yourself", i.e, drop it in "1" at the light, and when it goes green, drop the hammer, pull it to redline, and bump the lever into "2", and then likewise, "3". I was told this can "burn out" the gears, and so it's better to leave it in "3" if you want to be sporty and just let the car shift itself.
I've tried the shift-it-yourself procedure once, and handily dished out punishment to a Honda Prelude. I also on occasion use the ratios to slow me down if I have to make a quick highway stop (lights on the highways here, grr)... that is, I wait until I'm in the right speed range, and then drop the lever in "2" for some extra compression and to save wear on the brakes.
What do you guys know about this, and am I doing bad things to the poor tranny? True or false on the owner's advice?
