No, both cars use the same engines - 1.8L M42 at 138hp or 1.9L M44 at 140hp.
What is true is that the sedan is ever-so-slightly lighter than the coupe, but this will make no difference at all as far as performance goes.

how is the sedan lighter? it has more doors and its bigger!? :S
'is' has only a few goodies that the 'i' doesnt have, and not engine-wise, im not sure what or if the suspension is one of them but i doubt it.

Actually the 318I has the m40b18 and m43b18 engines depending on the year it was made whereas the 318is uses the m42b18 and the m44b19.
The m40 and m43 engines have 111hp/162nm and 113hp/168nm respectively and the m42 and m44 engines both have 138hp with the m44 having an extra 5nm of torque at 180nm.
So to answer your question the 318is is more powerful but it terms of faster, if both shared the same transmission i would say it would be down to the drivers skills

I had read that somewhere on this board, but I doublechecked just to make sure, and it turns out that the sedan and coupe are within three pounds of each other. The convertible, however, is slightly lighter.

hmm, i always thought that convertibles are slightly heavier coz they have to put in a lot more support as there is no roof, for safetly, which weighs more than the roof!?
I've got a '95 318ic. According to BMW, it's about 500 pounds heavier than the coupe and sedan. My girlfriend has a 97 318i 4-door which is much quicker off the line. Hers is an automatic and mine's a 5 speed. I think hers has a higher rear-end gear ratio, hence the stronger acceleration.
