Just means that your oil levels are running a lil low. Its intermittent depending on how the oil levels are at various points of the day (driving raise sand lowers levels). Just go to your auto dealer and buy a quart of their best synthetic oil (Mobil 1 ought to do).....and pour in a little into the brake reserviour following the instructions in the manual ( assuming you have one). Remeber not to add too much. The light will go away.
Ciao and dont fret too much....bimmer's lights usualy like scaring ya more than anything....read the manual and it answers most common questions.

I don't know if the computer on the '04 models is different in that reguard, I'd call the dealer and ask them, not that you'll get a good answer, that does sound odd to me, then again, I don't have an '04 model.

i think you are all wrong,,,,on my 2004 e46 bimmer the RED light is oil and the YELLOW light,,that looks like an engine,is the engine check light,,for the emmisions
if it stays on it means the emmisions values have deteriorated
also if it is the RED oil light,,and it stays on AFTER the engine is switched off, then it is the oil levels!!!page 137 of the manual
hope this helps
and get the colours right :-)

We are not wrong , on this cars (also on yours ) red engine oil light is for low pressure you have to stop car immediately when it comes on while driving. The same light come on with a different color (yellow),when oil level is at the absolute minimum. (also stay on with the engine off to tell you that you have to add some oil)
I purchased a new 2004 330xi in July. I called the dealer when the yellow oil light stayed on after I turned off the car. They said that this usually happens around 6000mi - it just means that the oil was a little low. I stopped in at the dealership and they topped it off at no charge - in and out in 10 minutes.

So you think the manual says 'pour engine oil into the BRAKE RESERVOIR'????
It could also be a fauly oil sensor like mine. I had the light start coming on around 8k, but the oil level was fine. Dealership replaced the sensor and my oil for me per SIB 11-07-03

Yes ! we red your info and you B S owners of those great cars ,tellin them to pour engine oil into brake fluid reservoir and jeopardazing their safety - this is unacceptable on this forum !!!!!
I had the yellow/amber oil light come on in mine at about 55000 miles and it turned out to be the oil level sensor not the low oil. Just thought thought i'd add my experience in there.
