I bought a 2001 BMW316i 32000 miles recently. Seems to run well although maybe slighty noisy at low speeds. It seems to be quite heavy on fuel. The On Board Computer gives the following readings:

urban driving of 88 miles, average 27.9 mpg at avg speed 23.3mph
motorway driving of 46.7 miles, average 35.7mpg at avg speed 62.0mph

The manual states 25.2 mpg urban and 47.9 mpg extra urban with combined of 35.8.

Does mine sound reasonable or should I be getting that checked out?

the puter is notoriously unreliable. calculate your mileage on the basis of a few fill-ups, then re-post ans we can see. 316 should be getting about 24 in town, and 33-40 hwy (depending how slow you drive). never heard of 47 really, unless in 5th doing 50.
