I think you are wrong :P . The button is a prewiring for BMW's mobile car phone... I think. My 1999 328i has it in the steering wheel, but is not compatable with bluetooth. On the trunk (inside lid) has markings for what was prewired. Alarm, CD changer, Phone.

The centre phone on the consul is big and ugly and definitely looks dated. To me it is the most dated thing in the car, so if you don't have one, as I don't, you're lucky. Todays phones are smaller, sleeker and look better.
