Hello, HELP! I just got a 2004 325xi. manual. I've had it almost a month now and have noticed a loud/grinding/squealing/rattling sound when I first start it. it lasts about 5sec and then it's all good! It only happens on a cold start. It's almost like something needs to be oiled? Any ideas? Appreciate the advice!
It sounds like it's coming from the back-end actually, maybe to do with the all wheel drive (DSC) adjusting itself? It's completely fine after the initial start and I hear nothing while driving. Maybe a heat shield/muffler sheild is rusting or needs lubricating?
Doesn't seem like a heat shield would only make that noise on a cold start and then disappear, that would be a more consistant noise. In fact, what do you have that upon ignition is moving in the rear of the car? Your diff and shaft don't move until you put the car in gear and hit the gas.
Its more of a grinding, rattling than a squeal. It crescendo's and then goes quiet. I'm taking it in for maintenance this week, so hopefully they can identify it.Whatever it is- it sounds awful! Like a plane is about to lift off out of the garage every morning. I'll keep you posted on the outcome. Thanks!!
I took it to the dealer for my Inspection and they said the sound is from the solenoid valve opening, but that it was 'normal'?? I don't think so! I want to take it somewhere else to double check as I have warranty til end of next year and would not be happy if it could/should be fixed now. Any thoughts/concerns I should be aware of? Anyone else have this issue? tx
A noise that bad can't be normal. Take it back to the dealer, or another dealer. Let them keep it overnight so it can cool down good and have them start it and hear the noise. Dont let them get away with "its normal". You will regret it latter, big time.
Thanks for the advice. That's what my gut is telling me also! Otherwise the ride is sweet- it's just those first 5-10seconds on the morning that makes me worry and cringe (a little) I'll keep you posted..
