What's the deal with the off color shifter in our E46s?

All E46's I've seen with an automatic and wood trim have matching color on the shifter (I think ). Maybe yours either was replaced with one that doesn't match, or the coloring has faded with exposure to the sun.

My Auto/steptronic shifter matches the rest of the wood trim spot on.
