What engine do u guys like the most? the 330, 325, 328 (not sure if it was in a E46) etc... I wnat a decent performer and i would like to have some mods availble for when i get bored and want some more out of it. I would also like it to be pretty reliable. The car will be manual!
of the ones you mention, the 330 will be the best performer. As for mods, performance parts tend to work regardless of engine, so I would personally recommend the 330Ci.

The best engine in the non-m e46s is the 3.0 used in the 330 with the performance package, which became available in 2003 -- 235 hp. The regular 3.0 follows (215 hp), and the 2.8 in the 328 is the only other I would recommend (193 hp).

I don't know baout the best bang for the buck, but some good upgrades are: software, underdrive pulleys, intake, exhaust, lightweight flywheel. If you want lots of power and have the $$$, look into a supercharger kit.

the engine's reliability is OK, but the power is crap. i'd go for at least a 325, if not the 330.

I am always confused between the specs of US cars against the rest of the world. The power figures are always significantly less in the US for the e46. What exactly is the deal with this?
