not to sound cheezy, but take good care of the car (exterior/interior), wax & wash regularly with a couple of grand spaced over a few years. A clean car is the next best thing to have after a well performing/reliable car. Makes the world of difference.
Trade in for an M3 or a Corvette if you really want brute power.
In this car you can try to add bigger and fancy wheels, dinan air intake/mufflers
DON'T add bigger wheels you will just decrease your 0-60 time. I say get a nice Dinan Cold Air-Intake, some Performance springs and shocks from H & R, a Dinan or AC schitzer Exhaust system.

What modifications are there? Basic mods would be intake, exhaust, software, pullies, new rear diff., etc. For a 'couple grand' you could purchase all of these, but to be honest, they aren't going to make a world of difference. You'll definitely get better throttle response and some more pickup. If you want to make it considerably faster you'd need to supercharge it or sell it off for something designed to be 'fast'
You know, I don't think anyone has mentioned it... your still under warranty with an '05, I wouldn't fool around with anything in the engine until it runs out. The only thing you could do would be rims and a shark injector (chip). One that you can REVERSE the process when you return to the dealer for any service. Just to cover your ass...just incase.
The Shark is available on turner motorsports.... not sure though.. it's around $350 +/-.

F...K DINAN, just thought I would add that. Not worth the money, in fact, my dealer (MY DEALER) stopped dealing with them as it was too expensive FOR THEM!
For aftermarket accessories, well there's a HUGE list that is out there of stuff, you really should do a search in this forum. AC Schnitzer is good, but expensive, not as much as Dinan though.
Here's a small list of company's, the most popular i think, but could be wrong:
