First of all I was not giving you my advice!
He asked when we change our oil and what grade we use and I told him!
With under 40 posts and an attitude like that, you are not going to last very long here!

I change the oil every 5000 miles.
I have been told that this is recomended by BMW.
What does everyone else use.
Thanks.

I use Castrol 0W 30 in my 2001 3.18i. I stand subject to correction, but I think Castrol is the Oil of choice for BMW. Previously it was Castrol 10w30 but it is now 0W30 this oils i prevents the build up you were getting when you use the 10W 30.
I think this started in 2001.
I guess I didn't phrase the question right.
I am using Mobil 1 5W30 (winter and summer).
Mobil or Castrol is irrelevant to my question.
I was wondering if 5W30 is the correct viscosity number.
Someone stated that I should be using 0W-40.
I am wondering if I am harming the engine running 5W-30.
Thanks

Yeah ! 5w/30 is recomended , but only for BMW high performance synthetic oil. When you use another brand 5w/30, please look on the back label of the bottle, if there is written ACEA A3 ( european sequance index ) ,that`s OK !, but you can not use anything like A1 OR A2 (obsolate formulas) do not meet specification for Bimmer engines. BTW I have not seen any other 5w/30 on North American market with ACEA A3 , except BMW high performance synthetic oil made by Castrol.( Regular Castrol Syntec 5w/30 is completly diff. staff - good for bike chain lubrication , hah , hah ,hah !
