I thought somebody here got to know. This picture is taken from underneath of 2002 325i Manual gearbox facing toward front of the car vintage point just about where gearbox meets drive shaft.
As depicted in the picture I would like to know what this small hex bolt does. It does collects droplets of engine oil, and some time I can smell hot oil inside the car, especially if idling on long traffic light. Engine doesn't use oil at any rate that would raise eyebrows: 3-4mm on dip stick at 5,000mi interval. Transmission was full to the brim, as I left it after changing transmission oil at 120Kmi. Rear end leaks a little at front seal, but in 40K mi it lost only 40 mL of oil.
So the only place I notice oil droplet forming is this hex bolt. No oil traces from above, that I can see, or from the front. I had fixed a major leak at dipstick o-ring about 5k ago and cleaned area as much as I could without taking reinforcement plate off.
Any input here?
Thanks in advance,
