weird brake lights

hi all,
looking for some much needed help!
just got my first bmw 318se(2000) and have an issue with the brake lights,
when i step on the brake the lights come on however when i turn the lights on only the rear fog light comes on! if i step on the brake with the lights on the brake lights work.
could this be something to do with the bulbs or the grounding issue which seems to be a common problem and yes the warning lights are present on the dash!!

Bad Earth, check all the connections for corrosion.

Do the same things happen with the rear fog light switched on or off?

thanks guys for your advice,
have replaced bulbs but still the same
have checked connecters for corrosion but all looks fine
also makes no difference with front/rear fogs on (although front fogs look a bit dim!)
on my way home the warning lights went off briefly and 1 brake light worked but then i had no indicaters flashing on the dash but they were working outside!!

gonna take it back to garage where i bought it and let them sort it out at their cost!

This seems like a wiring issue, there may be a couple of bad grounds.
