There are two cars that I have interest in. They are both '04 330i's with all kinds of options. One is white and the other orient blue. Anyway, one is at a BMW dealership and is listed for 34,900 (certified BMW) 5k miles and the other is at a regular ol' car lot at 31,900, 7k miles.

Is there any advice on getting the price down? How much to offer? Does it matter if it is at a BMW dealer or not? Am I paying more for certified and can that be removed, so I can get the price down and certify it later when the factory warranty is almost up?

Thanks for any advice. Both cars are out of state.

Curt

Only cars sold from BMW dealers get the certified tag, which gives you a 2 year /50k extension on the warranty, but not the maitenance (meaning oil changes, brakes etc are on your dime).

You could probably extend the warranty on the car from the used car lot, but I believe its a couple of grand extra.

If you have interest in a new one, look around at the local dealers. BMW is giving a 2500 incentive to the dealers this month (check edmunds.com) to move the E46s and make room the E90s. That was how I ended up in an 05 last week instead of a pre-owned car, it was just a little bit more expensive for a brand new car over the used ones available. Only problem is that they don't have a huge selection, so if you are particular about the color and options you want, you will really have to look around.

Unless you have a lot of cash to burn...buy a 3 year old BMW.
2001 or 2002 330i.
Looks the same, drives the same, depreciation will have slowed down to a trickle.
Buy Private and look for an honest mechanic.
The dealer will suck you dry even with a warrantee.
Good luck!

Like he said unless you wanna show off in a spankin new car.....( which it is not considering its a 2004.......:-)).....buy a 02 or an 01. The E46s are awesome cars and they will cut your cost by at least 5-8 grand depending on where yu go....extra cash which you can spend in warranty or mods. So if you buy the 04....it comes with a 4 year 50K warranty.....why would you wanna spedn the extra $$$ on BMW certified for a year old car...???? So the car lot guy will not certify it....for gods sake its already in the CPO for at least 4 more years......so why bother? Secondly the dealership will try (and prolly suceed) in selling all sorts of bullcrap that you dont need (thats how they make the money). Third the bargaining power is always better at a non-BMW dealership. My car was listed at 24800 (01 325 xi.....one year back...pristine condition.....30K miles...low for 3 year old car)....I bargained it down to 21800.....and did not go any down cause i just loved the car and it showed on my face...... :P . I used the extra couple of grand to buy a 4 year 100000 mile warranty that mirrors the factory CPO and I am all set till 2010. I am sure if I had kept a straight face he wouldve gone down a grand more. Fourth unless you wanna keep this car for the rest of your life....and not try a hand at the newer models coming out every five years.....go with a cheaper car.....that looks like new.....and then cause the depreciation is low ( I can stillsell my car in a year and break even with what I paid for it) you wont feel bad for selling it for a better . My 0.02$ and I am bored.....

Thanks for the responses. My real concern is who owned it. There is an '04 at a BMW corporate dealership (only two in the country?) that has a 330 with 5k miles on it. It was owned by a BMW rep so he says. I don't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing?

I will look into buying a new car. I really haven't looked at that yet. Like was stated, they are trying to move the old and in with the new.

Thanks again,
Curt

Does anyone know how much more the '06 will be than the current model? It is 100 pounds heavier and a little larger; is the fuel economy the same?

Here is the car I am looking at:
