If your car is under the standard warranty, can you buy the extended warranty for 100k miles>? how much does it cost?

Yes , you can and it is sometimes worth to buy, those cars are expensive to fix when they brake down. As you still under original warranty, the best thing is to buy from BMW Dealership, gonna be cheaper and more secure, rather than any warranty sold by any "hilly billy" company.

Do you have to buy the extended warranty right away or can you wait until the standard one expires or gets close to it?

You can wait till one month before your original warranty expires.......then buy a new one. I reccomend that cause it will save you paying twice for the same thing. But dont wait till more than a month left on your original.....you can still buy the warranty but the rates go up exponentially.

Cheers

Thanks for the reply. You're absolutely right. Why pay the extended warranty while the standard one is in place.
