My car is a 2002 E46 318i fitted with the 2-liter valve-tronic engine.
From cold, after driving exactly 1km, the car would sometimes produce a flat spot once (always at the same corner). After that I could drive all day without a problem. Then a few months later, the engine started cutting out for a period of aprox 1 second during the warm-up phase. Both problems where intermittent, say once in a period of 2 or 3 weeks.
Today, aprox 3km into the engine warm-up phase, the engine cut out completely and could not be restarted. Once a friend came to tow the car, one last try in starting proofed successful and I could drive away, un-aided.
The car has done 120 000 km and lives in a dry, temperate zone, never sees temperatures close or under freezing.
I don't suspect the usual electrical earth problem, because it only happens in the engine warm-up phase.
