Hi all, this is my first post here. I'm looking to buy a 2000 323Ci coupe with as few miles as possible, keeping the price under 25 grand (5 speed only). I have about 5 or 6 weeks before I need the car so I have some time to shop around. I was wondering if there are any specific problems or issues I should look for, interior or mechanical. I have a fairly extensive mechanical background so I will be looking at these cars from all angles. Also, I will look for a car with the sport package and would like to know what other options you guys think are worthwhile. Thanks.

my first recommendation you've already got covered-a five speed is the only way to drive. secondly, i'm very happy with the xenon headlights. i strongly recommend them. and the heated seats too. in the winter there's nothin like a warm bottom. i'd also say to make sure the alarm is already installed. i guess they don't always have one.
you should be able to swing one for a bit less than 25g's. i have that exact car, it had high miles but was in perfect shape. it was only twenty... and damn beautiful. and that was last march. (great choice on the car by the way)

agreed..i love my 323. it has a LOT of potential. i would usually recommend BMW's certified preowned cars, but since 323 coupes are made in the year 2000, its pretty useless to pay extra for a warranty that has or will expire soon.

problems arent major but they are very common:

check the sunroof (if it has one) often the sunshade becomes loose and gets off track.

also check the interior window liner that runs along the A-B pillars inside..they sometimes come loose also.

Check the suspension, that's one of the things that can start to go wrong early on some e46's, especially if driven 'aggressively'. control arms & bushings, rear shock mounts. Don't buy a car with bounce, you'll be replacing suspension parts left and right. (unless you like the hooptie bounce look!)
check out every single electricial feature, and make sure all the windows roll fine (the motors on the coupe doors are notorious for failing, alot).

Good luck!
