Is it a "smart key" with a battery that needs to be recharged while in the ignition switch?

Might be a bad lock cylinder.

your best bet would be to just look at the manual that came with the car, it should have anything you need to know to change the ignition switch

I cant locate anything on switch removal, but ive done them before, remove the cover from the bottom of the steering wheel, you will then see the rear of the switch, from then on its common sense really.
I have got this:
BMW E46 DIY (Do It Yourself)
Which is basically a workshop manual nearly. just click on E46 on the left, the scroll down and click on what you want to do.
Good Luck.
