we.....im a little confused here ghead , you see ive been searching online for salvaged vehicles (mainly e46 m3s). Im turning 16 this summer and getting my first car, my budget is around 25-30 grand. I was planning on MAYBE (if i could afford) getting an e36 m3 used. Well im seeing all these amazing salvaged cars online;

http://www.readytofix.com/Inventory/...heft_Black.htm

http://www.autosource-online.com/pics/99Viper(RF)17.jpg

and im thinking i could drive a viper at the age of 16 which is kind of amazing

The viper has a missing bumper and a few body dents and scratches which for 20k, you cant complain, an extra 2-3k and you have yourself a new bumper and fixed body. The m3 is in perfect condition, it wont start, but im sure that i can easily get it running with the extra 5 -10 grand i have to spend on it. I know that theres a few downsides to buying salvaged vehicles, like resale value, btut i dont care about these things cause i dont want to sell them if i buy them.

All of this seems to good to be true, And im wondering why more peopel dont take advantage of these auctions. Is there some sort of catch or anythign i should know about???

The damage you see may not be as bad as the damage you can't see. Some people who die in car accidents look fine and don't shed a drop of blood, but its the internal injuries that kill them - same with a car.

With the budget you have why not consider a used 330i, trust me, you'll thoroughly enjoy it.

nah i dont want a normal 3 series, theres too many around here, I just want an e46 m3. Im not worried about many minor problems the car could have, whats the worst that could happen?

okay leave the viper out, just think about the m3, any thing i shoudl worry about (besides insurance), theres plenty of m3s i see that were just stolen and driven around a bit, they cant be that bad...especially for a first car, and im going to fix up any salvaged car i buy...

Good luck finding an insurance company that will insure a salvaged vehicle for physical damage coverage. Some won't touch them at all, but in most cases, you'll at least be able to get liability coverages.

Why anybody would want a salvaged vehicle is beyond me........

well in my position (im turning 16), I would prefer a salvaged e46 m3 over a used e36 or whatever iw oudl get. so besides insurance, is there any other reason i shouldnt get one?

BMW's have their fair share of problems in general, and are expensive to fix. Throw the salvage factor into that, are your potential for problems and costly repairs has just multipled 10 fold IMO. On top of that, resale value will be terrible.

However, you could end up with a great car for cheap - you'll never really know unless you go for it and keep it for a few years - only then will you know if it was worth it.

It's kind of like insurance - how much risk are you willing to incur. The more $ you spend, the safer off you'll be.
