yes I fly a boeing 767.
I looked under the car and the muffler and pipes are clear of any part of the body. There is a head shield directly above the muffler. I took everything out of the trunk and will drive it around tomorrow and check it again.
Do you have the Harman Karman stereo and speakers in the trunk? There is a amp in the back that might be causing the smell. Not sure yet but trying to eliminate things.
I found where the smell comes from. The shock towers in the trunk are covered with a rubber type insulator. The insulator smells like melted crayons. Mine were very bad. When I removed them they crumbled. I quess from the heat in the trunk. My car is still under warranty so I'll see if the dealer will replace them. Good luck if any of you have the same problem.
How do you get to the shock towers from the trunk? My trunk smells like crayons too. The BMW tech. couldn't find the problem, and informed me that I spilled something toxic in the trunk. Not so, but he told me I had to find the origination of the odor, then bring it.
Have smelled the apmlifier insulation and I don't think that's it. The rubber insulation on the shock towers is my next destination, once I find them. Thanks in advance.
We have a 2003 330 xi with the same melted crayon smell and I am sure is is coming from the karmon hardon speaker foam mounting insulation in the rear speaker deck. I have been to the dealer with this, but they claim to not be able to identify it and think we have spilled something in the trunk - not so! Has anyone had any success getting the dealer to replace this odor source under warranty? Ours is so bad we can't open the sunroom as it sucks more odor into the car from the trunk area.
