Transmission Problem

I have a 2001 325i with automatic transmission. The reverse gears stopped working suddenly yesterday. When you shift in reverse, the engine reves as in neutral and the car moves very slowly, if at all. The forward gears are fine and shifting is normal at all speeds.
Any clues?

The 1st thing I would do is get a box service, I had this in drive in 1st, the rest were fine, after a service all was fine.But make sure you have BM atf & filter not another make.

Dammit! I thought the 2001 model was not prone to this failure.

Oh, btw, you're screwed. Time for a rebuild. Good luck and Shop around. There is a list of repair shops on that web site that are very familiar with your problem and may not shaft you quite as bad.

Otherwise, if you are mechanically inclined, you could rebuild it yourself.
