Cool Transmission postion does not match

Okay so here is the deal - I get in my car and shift into reverse and the indicator does not change - it always says it is park - when I put it into gear(car runs and drives fine no error code) a plastic on plastic sound happens.

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Could be a connection issue in the shift lever.
