Well, my local service shop, 70 miles from nearest BMW dealer says the BMW dealer price to him on fluid alone is $184 for my 328i.
Anyone had experience using Amsol or Red oil trans fluid, synthetic of course? So far, I'm being told to just forget changing the stuff at 115,000.

I think , he is talking about auto transmission according to price for the fluid. For GM5 (French made) Auto tranny you need 5 liters special fluid made by TEXACO(not exchangeble with other fluids including Red Line) $17 per litre availible only at BMW stealership. Then, if your car is equiped with ZF(German made) tranny, you need Shell or Esso fluids (label indicates on the tranny pan, which one) $30 + per litre. For manual transmission Red Line is perfectly fine(need 2 quarts) $16per quart/liter.
The auto-boxes in E46 cars are filled with a life-time oil and only need change after a repair or leak if you do need to refill the box pay the money and get the right stuff BMW don’t give an alternative for these boxes which they always did in the past if one was available.
