I am a newbie on this board so please forgive me if i feck up in any way.
I have done a search on glovebox torches and would like to know where in the glovebox this should be as I just have a socket on the right of the glovebox and want to know if the dealer has 'forgotten it'.
This may seem petty but if I should have then I want it as they've messed me about a bit already.
BTW it's a shiny black 318SE with 500 miles on and I'm loving it so far

That's where it shoudl be. Sounds like the dealer "forgot" it.

I bought a 318SE Compact about 6 months ago which also had no torch.
The dealer told me that it was no longer supplied as standard as there had been little demand for it.
You can buy one from the parts department for around £15.

Just curious: What BMW head office in UK has to say about it?

it isn't a standard fitting on aus cars these days, but as a result, they put a little plastic cover over the socket - if you dont have the cover (its not something that will just fall out) you should probably have the torch
