just got 18*8.5 hamann hm2 and would like to know the widest tire i can get with a 40% side aspect ratio , and no rubbing problems on a 2001 325i sedan w/o sport package

Here is safest fitment : 225/40R18 on 8.5" wheels fits without rubbing.

Many use 235/40R18 which sometimes requires a fender lip roll.

for god's sake please make sure you are not rubbing brake lines.

a static test is usually inadequate, leave at least 1 cm of room.
