timing belt? or chain????? please help - BMW Forum

hi, may sound a stupid question to some but i have had diferent answers of the people i have already askd, i have a 320td compact and need to know wether it has a timing belt or chain, and eitha way when should it be changed.... any help would be apreciated. thanks

Timing chain.......It should only be replaced if the engine fails for some other reason or it becomes noisy.

Unless you're getting a lot of chain slap you should never really have to replace the timing chain.

This is why I love timing chains. So much more reliable then a belt.

I was at a scrap yard the other day, and to my big shock i seen a 3 ser with a belt in it!!! Which BM's have belts instead of chains?

I thought they all used Chains! But this was 100% a BMW engine with a belt!!!! Whats going on there??

What 3 series was it? For example, the E30's with the M20 I6 have timing belts.

Oh yea, Tip (Maybe only for 4 cl mods)

Took off my oil cap and i can actually see my Cam chain easily from there

Chain looks good! DONT POKE YOUR FINGER IN THO hahaha
