Ticking sound?

Hi guys, a friend has a new '08 328i. When he starts it he gets a ticking sound from the engine that stays while it idles.
While at the dealer the other day they started up an X3 with the 3-litre engine and it had the same ticking sound.

This is very annoying as it sounds like bad lifters on an old beat up Chevy and it should not appear on a new BMW.

Any ideas as to what causes this ticking? and is it normal? Thanks.

Maybe it is the sound of the injectors? My mom's Acura Tl has a annoying ticking noise but it is the injectors.

I would say its the lifters/ valves, must take a while for the oil to get up there and get to pressure.

It seems like the ticking noise stays audible for a long time. I sure hope its not the lifters but I guess its possible.

Just had this problem solved a couple months ago. Go in and have them check your pulleys and belts. The bearings were shot in the pulleys and at idle, it would tick sounding like lifter problems.
