I Have a 1999 318i. Is it normal for the engine temperature to rise when encountering a steep hill. The temperature gauge moves up rapidly and falls down again as soon as going over the hill.
sensors these days are buffered, so they do not inform you of the minute fluctuations (such as uphill where the temp does rise indeed).
so either:
1.the sensor/electronics went hywire and no longer buffer
2. you have a real cooling problem: thermostat not opening fully, or low coolant level, or air lock after coolant change.
