I have a 2000 318ci and when i open the sunroof fully it works properly. However when i want to close it and flick the switch to close it starts to close and then when it is about half way over it stops moving and fully opens again. I can fully close the sunroof when i hold the switch to close it. Anybody got any ideas as to the problem??
I have the same problem! But it doesn't happen all the time. I took it into the dealer and they were unable to replicate the problem. Ofcourse, that's how it happens. You take the car in and the problem temporarily disappears.
Check the cover that is between the inside of the car and the sunroof. That little sliding cover can sometimes get pushed back too far and if so it won't let the sunroof close. Just pull it forward enough to see it and then try to close the sunroof. If that doesn't work then I have no idea.
You were spot on. It was that the sunroof cover was catching, so i took it out re tightened the 4 mounts, re-greased them and re-installed the cover and the sunroof worked perfectly.
Thanks for the suggestion.
qilfu, you should check that you don't have the same problem with your sunroof cover. It is quite easy to take out.
I feel good that I helped...the bad part is I don't even own a BMW yet. But the same problem happened with my girlfriend's car. I went to check out a 2000 323Ci this past weekend but the guy was asking for too much for the condition the car was in. Went to a few dealerships and they all are supposed to call me when they find something within my price range.

Qwiet,
I will definitely take a look. Considering that I'm not technical at all.. when I mean not technical, i mean, I can't even change a tire I may have a hard time. If you can tell me in more detail I'd appreciate it.
The sliding cover that is between the sunroof and the interior of the car...the cover you pull closed when you don't want to see your sunroof, its probably back too far to let the sunroof close so pull it forward or even closed if need be and then push the button to close your sunroof.
I also had sunroof problems on my 03 bimmer. It sounds like it was the same problem you had with the roof closer interfering. I took mine in and they fixed it. A piece had actually broken off of the closure but the dealer fixed it in half a day and now it works fine.
by the way, I love my bimmer! (sure beats the heck out of the 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan Sport I traded it in for!)

I bought a new 2004 330xi in July and have had only one problem - the sunroof. It seems that when opening, the exterior portion catches the interior portion (the sunshade) and pulls it too far back.
After the shade gets stuck in the retracted position, it's difficult to get the roof to close. The exterior portion closes only so far and then senses an obstruction and opens back up.
I'm taking it in to the dealer on Wednesday to have it fixed because getting it "unstuck" caused the shade to completely come off track. I can't even open the shade. During these last few days of nice weather in the Northeast, it's an annoyance.
It seems like this is a pretty common problem, tho.
