I have an 05 325i with just under 60k miles and recently it started making this strange whining noise when i start it up in the morning. It is coming from the tranny/exhaust area but I can't figure out exactly what it is. Any ideas?

is it a manual transmission? if so it could be the throw out bearing. let in and out of the clutch and if the noise stops with the clutch in thats the problem.
unfortunately it is an automatic. I am leaning towards an exhaust leak but that is mainly just wishful thinking. I can't check my fuel filter because it's inside of the fuel tank(M56) motor, and I don't have the tools necessary until next weekend to get underneath the car. Te noise is only when the car i at idle and most noticeable cold. I have also been told to look at the u-joints to see if there could be something there. I appreciate any suggestions.

well its not the u-joints if its at idle, your not moving. hard to say, maybe its a loose heat shield rattling on the exhaust??
It is coming from one of the emissions components. Go California laws. I ate this state.... Anyways, my mechanic hasn't been able to dig in yet but i think it's important in case someone else runs across this problem so I will keep you posted.
I had a similar-sounding issue with my '04 325xi. Turned out it was the fuel pump and lines that were making the noises (discovered after a different dealer replaced two pulleys and belts with no effect on noises). Good luck.
I don't know if you found the problem, however I just came on-line to look for DIY tips to replace my fan clutch. My engine makes noise in the morning when I start it and it goes away as the engine warms up. My buddy is a mechanic and notice the clutch fan was getting loose. The fan is wobbley when it is touched. I hope that this helped! The part cost me about $88 at Arizona Autohaus...shipped. Great service as well!
A quick thank you to everyone that participates on this forum! You folks are great!
coming back to the mentioned u-joint, my 2000 328ci 5spd makes a loud squeking noise in the rear when im driving, which started right after i drove over a big puddle. any suggestions? ive been told it could be the u-joint. i hope to hell not.
sorry, didnt feel like making a new thread or searching.
