Stranded....

I recently purchased my first BMW and have loved driving it. Last night I was at a friends house and as I went to leave I put the keys in the ignition and as I went to start it everything shut off. It seems that I have blown a fuse, nothing electrical works. I had to have my friend drive me home, which was a very embarrassing trip because he was trying to make fun of me for purchasing a BMW. He lives half an hour away and I am hoping to go fix the problem today. However my car didn't come with an owners manual, therefore I don't know the first thing about where to look, or which fuse I should take to replace it with. If I could get some advice on what fuse it is, where to look and which one I should purchase to replace it with it.

fuses are in the top of the glove box. turn the two white knobs and down they come.

Forgot to mention this is a 2000 323i... The lights were on when I got in the car and then when I turned it they shut off. I don't remember any beeping either

If it is a dead battery why would the lights be on when I got in the car and then shut off when I turned the key?

What exactly happen when you turned the key? any clicking noises? The battery can have enough power to power all the lights and appear to have enough juice to start the car however it may not have enough to actualy crank the starter.

So you tuned the key and everything shut off as you said, no power at all, lights and dash shut off?
I would start with the fuses as said, but not rule out the battery as the culprit. Low power batteries cause all sorts of weird anomilies in these cars that anything can and will happen electronically. good luck.

Unfortunatly I cannot help you there. I am a couple thousand miles away from my car and can't look at the fuse diagram to narrow it down for you. When you look in the glovebox and pop the fuse box down there should be a labled diagram. Just start checking all the ones you think it might be, you may have to look at all of them. I know there are fuses located elsewhere as well, and I don't really know where or which ones those would be as well. Hopefully someone else will chime in with possibilities.

its not a fuse... you have a loose battery cable... go in the trunk and wiggle the cables enough so the trunk light goes back on, then try and start your car...

let us know...

Fixed it! Turns out it was just a very dead battery. I am not sure what caused it still. Thanks for all of the help I am excited to be a part of this new community. I am looking to post some pics of my new ride as soon as the weather clears up here...
