I am having a problem with my 2002 325. I am getting a really bad shimmering in my steering wheel. I have had the tires balanced and rotated and that hasn't helped. I took it to the dealer and they told me that it is because my tires are starting to wear. Yes the tires are wearing but they still have approximately 75% of life left. The shimmering dosen't occur all the time. It feels like something is sticking when I speed up. Also, a couple of times I thought I smelled burnt rubber. If anyone has any ideas as to what this might be I would appreciate it.

1. something is rubbing. look.
2. rotors warped. should get much worse with gentle pedal pressure, try at 70mph, you will feel vibration in the wheel.
3. ball joints worn out. inspect
4. bushings in control arm worn out. vide supra.
5. they screwed up balance. do it again at a supremely competent shop.

Sounds like a tracking problem..... could be the ball joints though. Go to a different garage.
