Hi. Thinking about getting an SMG. Have to drive in Los Angeles so the manual is out of the question. Anyone have this transmission. Would love to hear about it from someone who has used one with some regularity. thanks. mark
From a practicality standpoint, SMG is great. Convenient but fun. It took about a week to get used to, but it's great. I have to be honest that there are times I miss driving a stick, but then I just pop it into the 6-shiftmode and floor it and have a smile on my face again.
The ONLY drawback I can think of is that when you really really want to drive like an automatic, the DriveLogic is tough to deal with. It's really laggy, or hangs in a gear too long. Plus, the driver gets the "lurch effect" that a passenger feels in a stick car.
I personally never take the car out of the 5 or 6 shift mode and rarely use DriveLogic and it's been a fun 5 or so months with my car.
ive been using SMG for about 3 months now and for me its great. i never took the time to learn how to drive stick (yea i kno, i suck) so the SMG and paddle-shifting is sick. the auto mode however, as said b4 ^, is very lacking. i hardly ever even drive in auto mode- im fed up with the lagging and jerks.
SMG is a great option in comparison with the Steptronic, but for those who drive stick you'll probably be better off going with a manual.
also, if your planning to get a 330i/Ci with SMG, you wont be able to get the Performance(ZHP) package, which you shouldnt skip out on (i regret doing it.)

I am in the market for a 330i and my wife can not drive manual cars so is the SMG a options for some one that can not drive stick and just wants an auto mode for the emergency situations where she might have to drive the car. also what years is this offered is it offered in 2001? this sounds like it might be the answer to all my problems i love to drive manual cars but need the auto some times this is great if it works out. oh and how much will this raise the price of the cars i am looking a 2001 330i's in the 23000 range.
