running like crap - co2?

My check engine light came on, and then went off about a day later, but my car is running like crap - idling a bit high at lights, and warming up load, sluggish and with uneven distribution of exhaust. My owner's manual says that the check engine light means exhaust problems, and have investigated it a bit on here, but not sure what to do, as I dont know what an 02 sensor is or what it does. Cany anyone help? Thanks

the ONLY thing to do is goto a specialist and hook it upto the diagnostic machine....should take 15 minutes max

that's not entirely true. you could also buy your own fault-code reader from a local auto store or an online shop. it's a small device, slight bit larger than a D battery, plugs into your diagnostic port under the hood of your car. it will tell you what errors are stored in the computer. bring those errors back here and you'll get more help.

(FYI, diagnostic fee at a mechanic will run you maybe $75... $100 at the dealership. this reader costs $150.)
