remove oil filler cap 318 (2002)

Just had to change a coil and whilst removing the oil filler cap the plastic base snapped. The manual said to "squeeze the two sides without marks". I tried this but it would not shift. So some help of the trusty screwdriver did the trick but unfortunately broke the base of the cap. Ordered a new one.

Is there a trick to getting this "tight" cap to release easily next time?

I dont think there is any trick, maybe the cap was just old and stuck on. Hopefully the new 1 will fit better and not give you any problems. Good luck and Welcome to the forums.
