It's called the "clown nose" it's the LED for the factory BMW alarm.

speedsters right. the only reason you have it is because your car came pre-wired for the factory alarm since the alarm is a dealer installed option.

first off, welcome aboard Rishel

secondly, you do NOT need the BMW factory alarm to activate the "clown nose". i don't have the alarm and mine blinks as well as the corner lights flash when lock and unlock.

you can have your dealer activate this function.

yes AZ is correct. You can have the clown nose to blink without the alarm. You can even have the turn signals blink when you lock/unlock the car without the alarm.

I believe once you program the signals to blink for unlocking/locking the car and have the clown nose to flash when you lock the car, it is basically fooling the computer that there is an alarm onboard. When you do this, and get the OEM alarm afterwards, the alarm will self activate; with no need to activate the alarm at the dealer.

Hey!! I just purchased a 2000 BMW 323CI and have a few questions. When I bought it and lock it with the factory remote...my horn honks once then about 10 seconds later it honks again (when locking). When I unlock it...it honks twice. I took it to the BMW dealership and they programmed the car to flash the parking lights when locking/unlocking...now my mirror blinks > do I have a factory alarm? How come the horn honks instead of making a "chirp chirp" noise like my '96 E36 did? Also...under the steering wheel on that plastic area where your knees go...there is a "pin-connector" that looks like a headphone jack...any ideas what that is? It says SILENCER on it??? Do you think it might be aftermarket product working through my Factory remote to make the horn honk? If so, do you guys think it would be best to have it removed? My car has 10k miles left on original warranty, plus its a CPO BMW with extended 100k mile warranty. I don't want anything to interfere with it. Does aftermarket products usually interfere with BMW computers? SORRY FOR ALL THE QUESTIONS. Im new at the E46.

welcome aboard college_cars!! B)

it sounds like you have an aftermarket system on your car. when you lock it, try bumping it to see if the alarm or horns start going off. If it does, then you have an alarm on it. i don't think its the bmw alarm as you will get a chirp instead of the horns.

"silencer" is another security system as i have that on my truck. no alarms on it but it will disable the vehicle without disarming it first. come to think of it, maybe its a similar system rather than having an alarm on your car.

taking it off shouldn't interfere with the warranty. aftermarket products can void the warranty, but i found that the dealers would have to prove that the products are the cause before they can void the warranty.

hope this helps.

Hey!!
Thanks for your reply! I went to many different alarm installers today, and its not really an alarm, it just has the starter kill on it and makes the horn honk. It does not protect doors/hood/trunk or glass. I called Silencer corporation and they said that the alarm on my car can only be bought and installed on my car from the dealership as an aftermarket upgrade to the existing keyless entry. So...I called BMW USA and the tech there said that there is really no way that it could harm my car or interfere with the CPO warranty. Silencer Corp. basically said that it was more/less installed on the car at the specific BMW dealership it was sold from new as a demonstrator to show how the Starter kill works. Silencer said it is wired directly into the factory keyless entry and in the case of the remote battery ever dieing, the silencer alarm would sound the horn when you unlock the door with the key and would not let the car start until you put the key in the ignition, turned it to the own position, and hit the small button on the back of the alarm module itself underneath the sterring column. WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK????? SHOULD I JUST LEAVE IT ALONE, OR TRY TO HAVE SOMEONE REMOVE IT????? Please let me know. B)
