I just bought a certified pre-owned 2001 model 325i, and i am loving the car.

I felt it a bit odd this morning though, when the rear defroster didn't manage to chew through the fine mist of rain which was covering the rear window in the morning. I drove the 15 minutes to work, and for the first 8 there was little impact on the window, and it still wasn't completely clear.

Is this normal or is my defroster deficient?

All I can tell you is that I too have noticed a sound that I believe you are talking about in my 2003 330i. On two seperate occasions I have taken my car to my local BMW dealer and both times they have said they heard nothing odd. I find this hard to believe, but if this truely is the case, I'm pretty upset! Sorry I can't be any more help but at least you know your not alone.
