Rear Brake Noise

My old man has a 2003 E46 M3. Lately he's been complaining of a squeaking and/or grinding noise coming from the rear of the car. He says that the noise isn't evident all the time, maybe a few times a week on his commute to and from work. He says it sounds like it metal scraping metal. Does anyone know what this noise is and what needs to be done to stop it?

Check the rear brake but make sure you remove the discs and check the parking brake shoes they crack and break up

Any clue when it's happening? At a certain speed, during braking, during corners, etc?

Take it to the dealership and have them check the differential .

Check the pads. They are probably wasted. How many miles does this car have? Does he drive it pretty hard?

there is a bulletin for a noise it the differential which kinda seems like that maybe what your describing. Just a guess though. I'd have to hear it.
