I live in the 100+ degree weather. My 99 328i (and all of them in 99) has an AC condenser fan (the closer fan to the front bumper, NOT the one by the engine). Mine is running constantly when AC is on and it makes a loud noise. Do you have the same observation??? Is your fan running all the time and is it that loud? Or does it turn on intermittently?
They discountinued the fan on 2000, so is it really necessary in the 99?
Also, is your AC blowing really ICE cold air, or just cool enough to be comfortable?

Again.... Sounds like a bad pulley... Please do yourself a favor and get it checked... In hot temperatures the fan is on/off when the A/C is on. The A/C usually blows air just enough to be comtorable (depends on your temp setting).
Do yourself a favor.... Take a long 12"-18"+ screwdriver and set it up near the A/C pulley (touching a metal part near there but not close enough to f*ck things up to the point where you lose an eye) and listen to the screwdriver.... Any nasty noises may signal a bad pulley...
I can almost Guarantee you it is one of the pulleys...
BTW... The 323i shares the same setup you have....

well, I should add that this sounds absolutely normal because my AC fan is turning at huge speed - this is the noise I'm talking about. I shut the AC off and the fan is turning as well. I'm just gonna disconnect the sucker. That jet engine noise is making me sick. Mine never shuts off - just keeps on blowing.
How come air in bimmer is not ICE cold? I have it set at lowest 59 degree temp. This is what AC is for.... ???? (My Infinitis, Acura, Honda, etc always blew ice cold air...?)

I live in a desert and never run into those problems. If I'm in the garage and start up the car you'll hear the A/C fan come on and run but when you're in the car it's quiet as can be. It also doesn't seem to be going when I'm driving... can't really tell. Get it checked out to be on the safe side.
maybe I misunderstood you, but if it's the aux fan behind the bumper, then there is no pulley. This is an electric fan. If the loud noise you are describing is a loud roaring noise then it's just the fan on full speed and moving lots of air. If it's a rattling noise (like the old baseball card in the wheel spoke of your bike as a kid) then most likely there's debris in the blade's path. Anything other than that and you probably have a fan motor with a bad bearing (excessive shaft clearance).

and by the way.... DO NOT disconnect the fan. If it is constantly making the loud roaring noise then check with your dealer because there was a aux. fan recall but I don't remember the years affected by it.
