It means that your car is getting low on oil but that it is not completely serious yet. In the handbook it just states that you should add more at the most convenient time. If it comes on while you are driving, then it is serious and you need to fill up immediately. If I were you...just take this opportunity to change the oil if you haven't in a while.
That light deosnt neccasarliy mean your low on oil. If your oil level is fine, its more likely to be a bad oil level sensor. I had it go bad in one of my Bimmers. every time I shut the engine off the oil light would come on yellow. So just keep that in mind.
Look, in the manual that is what it says that light means. Unless you think there is absolutly no way that you can be low on oil I would get it checked out.

Right, the manual says to add oil at the next logical stop, say, the next fueling.
The question becomes though, which oil should we be using? This is my first BMW (2005 325i) and Im still 8000 miles from the next SII. Ive read Valvoline synthetic on this forum, but am curious about what the consensus is.

The German made Castrol 0w-30 is BMW LL-01 rated. The BMW 5w-30 oil from the dealer is also a very good oil made by Castrol. The only Mobil 1 oil that is BMW LL-01 rated is the 0w-40. Your dealer should top it off for free with your full maintance plan.
