oil change

i know the car has that mileage countdown thing, but how often do most people recommend getting an oil change or service

Some/most change the oil 2 times in the 15k 'service' interval. One at 7500, one at 15k. Just make sure you are using the right synthetic oil. DIY can be found here : http://www.my330i.com/lof.php

i change my oil every 4000 miles, because synthetic oil still picks up the dirt and unused gas or any other pieces of crap that get caught in any other oil. it just won't break down as soon.

I'll save you some time... for the most current e46 models.. i believe it's like 01+.. i think it still applies to the other e46 models.. but definitely for the 01+ models..

there's really only 3 oils you should be using (BMW approved)

1. OEM BMW 5w30 (duh)

2. German made Castrol Syntec 0w30 (It MUST say Made in Germany. This is hard to find so no one ever uses it. It's got a different colored bottlecap than the regular Castrol Syntec)

3. Mobil 1 0w40 (Arrr?!?? Yup, you read that correct. Mobil 1 5w30 DOES NOT meet BMW performance specs, only their 0w40 line does. Also says "European Car Formula" on the bottle)

oh.. and yea.. for me every 7500. do one myself and get the warranty one free... besides that.. the OEM BMW Castrol oil has proven not to last 15k miles... people have done oil tests..
