ok I'm almost up to 34k. My oil change light stayed on today (yellow) for a little while and when i start the car i get about 5k left till service.

Now, do i need to get BMW dealer service done, or can I just take it to my mechanic? What kind of synthetic oil do I use? used

You can do it yourself. If your car is newer than 2001 (I think that's the correct date) then you can reset the oil change / service indicator by pressing in the left pin on the instrument cluster before/as you turn the key to on. If you search the forum you will find more instructions on how to do the reset.

As for the oil change, the following is a good site that illustrates how to do it. It also indicates the type of oil to purchase and the BMW filter part number.
