Option 1
2001 orient blue 330i with 32K miles, heated seats, certified car. only has cassette deck but dealer willing to put factory cd player. don't like spoke wheels so would probably spend to get new wheels. cost $26K

Option 2
2002 orient blue 330i with sports package and nice looking wheels. 20K miles and build date of 12/01 so 9 months left on factory warranty. cost $31K @ CarMax

any advice would be appreciated. will there be any noticeable differences in asthetics or features in these cars (other than wheels and seats)?

thanks,
SW

You must like orient blue.....

Anyhow, in my opinion I wouldn't touch a 3 series w/ the sport package or a 5 speed manual. The rest is just fluff (although nice). I have heated seats and must say they are pretty nice, but I'd rather have the sport package if it came down to the two.

With the 2002 your also going to get the facelifted front end where the headlights are narrowed and stretched out - maybe you like one look better than the other and that will help in your decision? If the car has xenons, the 2002 will have the bi-xenon lights, whereas the 01 will only have the low beam xenon. Steering was re-calibrated on 02's, but for the most part they are the same car.

You must have noticed how much better the seats are in the car with the sport package vs. the one without....right?!

thanks for your feedback. yes, like orient blue so won't be so many look-a-likes. let me clarify that I have not driven the 2002 sports package since from CarMax. you must pay to have shipped before deciding to buy. I have 1999 328 and 2001 drove similar but little more power.

you indicated you would not touch a 3 series w/sports package or 5-speed. I'm assuming by your follow-up comment that you meant without and not "with". Can you provide insight into value add of sports package? by the way, all of these are automatic.

Sport package offers slightly different suspension and clear signals (on the CI anyway) along with different trim bits. I greatly prefer the sport package cars over others.

Yes, I meant without - I simply prefer manual.

Sport package adds - sport suspension, 12 way power adjustable sport seats, 3 spoke multi-function sport steering wheel, and 17 inch wheels instead of 16. I think most 330's have 17's anyway, but perhaps a different style wheel???

I have changed to a 330i with the sport package and manual transmission, it drives like a dream. The gear box is very nice and the ride firm but not too hard. The gear box feels nicer than my friends Aston Vantage and Lambo box. )

Get the latter E46 as it has warranty on it (and I'm surprised they aren't offering you an extended warranty for extra miles). That they aren't makes me suspicious of them. I just bought a 2002 330xi with 14,000 kilometres on it and was given lots of extra warranty on the car, you should be getting more as well. Are you shopping at a BMW dealership?

I think with a cost of $31,000 for the 2002, you might get a similiar deal from a dealership with extra warranty on the car. I'd definitely call around on that one.

Knowing what I know now after owning a few BMW's, I'd go for the sports package. By the way, my E46 is also blue.
