I have just purchased a 2000 323i and the mileage registers as 50 000 miles. I have checked carfax and they have no history since I purchased the vehicle from the original owner. The dealership doesn't even have any records of service. Is there any way to see if the odometer has been switched? Does the car's computer keep track and if I took it to the dealership can they tell for me. The reason I am worried is becuase the car only has 50k on it and I am having so many problems and the warranty has experied, but the screw were that hold the odometer in are striped and it seems like it not sitting in the dash properly?

I would definately have the dealer check it out... Although you would have to do a hell of a lot to reset the mileage (software etc etc) it is doable. The mileage is usually saved in the DME and a few other spots in the electrical system (too complicated for me to extrapolate on). If you're having problems have a dealer equipped with a modic or DIS check it out, some independent mechanics have these systems as well... If you do take it to the dealer though they can check the BMWNA database to find out when it was last serviced and what the mileage was...
Hope this helps

The problems I am having are:
The car will not start, every time I turn the ignition it just clicks, I think it might be starter. The traction control off light comes on and will not turn off when I push the button. There is also a squeeling noise from under the hood.
Ski is right, I think... These are probably "simple" things to replace or fix and may easily happen before 50k. What about people whose winow regulators constantly go bad before 5k? There's tons of them. Clicking is starter for sure, that's only $200-300.
true points if it clicks try looking at battery maybe loose cable or battery is defective. as for the speedometer being tampered with. The light control module and the speedometer hold redundant storage together if one has been replaced good module will transfer information to replacement. check to see bottom right hand corner of speedometer display if it has a light or dot lit up were next to yourt temp reading it has probably been tampered with
