What are "boot lights"? Do you mean the lights by the floor of the cabin, or the trunk? Define, "luggage compartment". Maybe this is a trunk in Europe.

Ahhhh sooo. Hey Russell, try checking the electrical connector to the "boot" light. It may have been knocked loose by something in your trunk...er...um, luggage compartment, excuse me. These are located on the inside of the light cluster on each side of your trunk. Simply twist the knob on the plastic cover and remove the housing, then unplug the connector and check it.
Also check the leads inside the connector itself for corrosion. Let us know what you find. (I just now checked my trunk to find the switch and I cannot find it either! Where the heck did BMW hide it? Perhaps in the latch itself?)

Sorry a boot in the UK's a Trunk, The bulbs and conector and fuse all seem fine so i'm thinking it must be the switch, I checked the conectors that supply the boot lock, but I think they are for the solinoid that operates the latch. I've got the BMW TIS on Cd but can not fin anything in their. Oh and its a convertible if that makes any differance.
There's gotta be a switch connected to that latch! I would call the BMW dealer.
If anyone out there has a car with folding rear seats, try this: fold the rear seat down on one side. Get into the back seat and while looking into the trunk from the rear seat, click the "open trunk" button on your key (or under the dash). Did the light come on? If so, then the switch is definitely in the latch, as the trunk isn't even open yet. If not, then have someone lift the trunk lid as you're looking though the seat passage and spot exactly when it comes on.
Just a silly thought.
