My key is stuck in the ignition, in the accessory position. I can turn it forward, and start the car, turn it back off, but only to the accessory position. I cannot turn it all the way back and remove it.
Does anyone have any idea what to do - the dealer says to bring it down
and they will look at it, they claim they havent seen this before.
2000 328 CI, forgot to mention its a 5 spd manual.

This happened to me about a month ago on my 2000 328CI. I just worked the key back and forth a few times until it finely decided to give me the key back. It has not happened since. I speculate that the lock cylinder needs to be lubricated and it might not be a problem again.

MY german e30, 320i 85 did that on sunday, I parked the car and turned the wheels to left, so it stayed that way all nite.
Next day it was locked and stucked.

A few times back and forth game the key back.

Not we are not turning the stearing lock on. When it happened on the e46 the wheel would still turn. The key would not fully return to the rest position.

I have had the problem once or twice, all I had to do was move the steering wheel till it locked and the key came out.

Okay I think people are talking about two different thingmajigs here

If the key comes out of the lock by moving the steering wheel slightly here and there I think thats prolly due to you having engaged the steering lock when you moved the steering afte removing the key. Its an additional safety feature.

If the steering wheel moves freely and the key still does not wanna come out thats a whole different issue. Not that I know how to fix it....jst thought I might clear out the two different thoughts running here in this thread.

If I am wrong just me out ...... my 0.2$

i got a 2000 328ci and this happened to me the other day, it also used to happen in my e30. Its when u turn the wheel slightly and try to take the key out simutaneously. The key gets stuck as the steering lock just kicks in , its like the lock is just about on, so the key wont come out. Dont worry it happens to loads of bmw drivers, a few twiddles as said b4 will make the key come out.

Thx for the comments....the problem was a stuck key, the steering was not locked as it moved freely, just couldnt move the key back from the accessory position, altho it would move forward, and start/stop the car.

After HUNDREDS of back and forth attempts, it finally got freed, and I could turn the key off and remove it. I was pressing the key in when it finally worked !
It seems ok now, I sprayed a slight amount of graphite lubricant into the key slot, I hope it helps prevent a recurrance.
