335i has HPFP failure (including 2009 model) issue that could reduce your power in half while driving on the freeway or even shut down completely. This is very dangerous if you take your family out or if you're just by yourself. BMW decided to replace the pump when it fails (extended warranty til 100k miles) instead of fix the issue for good (re-design the pump or whatever)
I regret that I bought 335i. If you want the power, get a 335d (no HPFP failure since it's diesel) or used M3.
Hi and thanks for the info on hpfp failure. As you know I just love the power of the 335i. I've been torn since the 335i came out. I can't believe BMW justs repairs the fuel pump. It has been 3 years now and no permanent fix.
I was already worried about warranty and safety, now this really complicates things. To make things worse, I live in a city that does not have a BMW dealership....the closest one is 6 hours away.
I see many owners have been without their car for days to months awaiting the new pump to come in........not a good scenario for me. I would hate to be stranded on the freeways with my 6 year old. This is a really good case to keep the ol 330i.

<----that's how I feel having just purchased my 09 335
I'm sure the aftermarket is busy making the 335i better. Probably a better fuel pump will come of it too.........only problem is that they won't be manufacturer approved and will void the warranty. This 10 year warranty they are offering settles my mind a bit, but being 6 hours away from a dealership.....I don't want to be stranded. I know they'll tow my car to the nearest dealership when under warranty and provide me with a loaner too, but with the amount of miles I put on the car the mileage portion of the warranty will never be reached within the warranty time frame. Will I keep the car more than 10 years??......probably not since I always like to keep current....but with wife and kid....kids?? who knows when my upgrading can continue?
Basically, I'm still torn but am more gun shy of the 335i now.
Only problem is that BMW doesn't share everything with indies. I think that is all really major items though.
In most cases, indies are more experienced than BMW technicians and know more about solving and identifying problems. Any knowledge that a BMW dealership has is usually trumped by the knowledge most indies have, especially if that indie owns a BMW or worked for BMW dealership at one point.
Wow, 6 hours to the nearest BMW delaership?! Damn I guess im spoiled here in the LA area, I have about 7 to choose from that are within a half an hour drive.
With you being 6 hours away that would be a huge issue in regard to the fuel pump. I myself have had my hpfp replaced 3 times!! But those 3 replacements only totaled around 9 days in the shop. That being said those 9 days hold nothing on the 500+ days I have spent loving my car! Thankfully during all of my hpfp failures my car was still drivable, in limp mode and moved like a turtle, but none the less drivable to the dealership.
Is owning the 335i worth it still???......even with the hpfp problems? RambleJ335 says the 9 days in the shop for 3 hpfp failures pales to the 500+ days of enjoyment.
Being 6 hours from the nearest BMW dealership......will continual failures still bring a flatbed to my door with a loaner on board?
Has there been any improvement from the 2007 335i to the present 2009 335i? Is one year better than the other to buy?
My 2006 330i is still looking better now with my 13200 miles and ownership since new. I was 90% in favor of trading my 330i in for a 2009 335i until I got the warning about the hpfp. Thank you for the heads up.
How have you owners with repeated failures been treated by the dealership?
I purchased my 335i brand new from a dealership in my city. Haven't had any "failures" thus far. It is my daily driver as I drive it close to 2k miles a month, depending on traveling schedule.
Yes, i'm one (if any) who purchased the warranty on my rims and run flats, just for the fact that I dont to directly pay for any reasons a run flat may fail.
Wall- it sounds like you want the power of the 335 but dont want to sacrifice the funds. Its a fast car, dont get me wrong. but for the amount of money I plan on spending to get 400+hp/tq, I think I should have looked into the IS-F. It would have been significantly cheaper, but don't get me wrong, its no BMW. Also seems like you concerned about the issues (hpfp) with the car. Heck, I am too and I have the darn car!!
I hope you guys wont attack me for my thoughts on the ISF. By any means I'm not plugging that car to be perfect. I'm sure it has issues too.
Walter it is becoming screamingly obvious that you are just DYING to get your self into a new 335i. After months of waffling back and forth, throwing out reasons, "deciding" to stay with your 330, then again coming back to the issue, it seems you will NEVER BE SATISFIED until you sit down in your new 335i and drive. SO - GO GET IT - it's a terrific car with a mutiple winner of the engine of the year in it! Make yourself happy - a nice mantra to live by...

Hey RoadsterMadness, thanks for the words of encouragement. You are right, I've been dying to get a 335i ever since they came out in 2007. I haven't been able to justify the extra money for the 45 extra horses.
I do love how they drive compared to mine. I will hang out to see how the 2009 fire sale goes and then pull the trigger.
I was in the dealership I purchased my 2006 330i from and my salesman came rushing to me. He knows I've been dying for a 335i. I asked him what he has seen at his service department for 335i's with the hpfp problem.
He did acknowledge that there is a problem, but he also says that he has had a 335i for the past 3 years as a demos and never has run into problems. According to him, the hpfp problem would be non existent if owners did not let their gas tank go below 1/4 tank. By running close to empty places more stress on the hpfp eventually leading to failure.
He also noted that there is also an injector problem. Again this is blamed on owners letting their car get below 1/4 tank. The fuel is there to cool the injector, so without fuel to cool the injector will eventually fail.
Probably would have flipped my 330i had I had it with me giving into impluse. Good thing I flew. Prices of 2009's falling but not far enough yet.
