I have the ipod integrated into my bmw. below are some experiences with it

1. the audio system doesn't remember random after you have shut off your car

2. if you remove your ipod from the car and reinsert then press play it will start at track 1 regardless of where you might be in your playlist

3. i've been experiencing occassional disconnects meaning the ipod will be playing then mysteriously stop...the system won't find it if i press mode...this would force me to disconnect the ipod from the cable then reinsert... it happens at least once a week or every other week. i have the current generation of the ipod and latest software revision but still experience this symptom (even before the software upgrade apple posted recently)

Here's a product to consider. I have mine on pre-order.

USA SPEC iPod Interface (Crutchfield.com)

It appears to operate in *exactly* the same way as the BMW solution, but at muuuuuuch less the cost...and it's easy to install. I'll let you know what I think when I get it running.

I used the Desion icelink and love it. I installed it myself and it works great. The best thing is that the song names scroll across the head unit. Good stuff. Their are a couple of quirks with it....if you press the button to display the clock it will only display for a second then the song name scrolls over it. No biggie for me though.

Looking at their site I see several connectivity options. Questions:

1. Do I need the "radio-end" connector to get the song info to display on the head unit?
2. Can I leave the iPod in the glove compartment and control it completely with my steering wheel/head unit controls? In other words, do I need to keep the iPod handy in order to navigate between playlists, artists, etc.?

A suggestion, don't install your ipod in the glove compartment (this at the recommendation of a BMW service department). Instead have it installed to fit inside the compartment below your radio, that way access to it will be easier. You will have to cut a small hole in the plastic to feed the wire through in the compatment, other than that a straight forward install.

On the Bimmer Ipod adapter, you can control the unit from the steering wheel.
