All 3-series 2002 and later are pre-wired for 6-disc CD changer and compatible a with auxiliary audio input adaptor for audio connection of portable music players.

That's about all the info I know..... can anyone explain how this works? Does anyone have an iPod integrated in their BMW?

I'm very interested in doing that rather than adding a CD Changer or MP3 head unit.

What all do you have to buy and does it really require professional installation?

the factory BMW Ipod adapter when installed leaves a lead in ur glovebox which charges the ipod and also interfaces it with the factory audio system. It will emulate a cd changer and play thru the deck displaying like 1-1 for playlist 1 track 1. It does not display the cd text.
As far as the installation goes it is a advanced installation involving pin removal of the factory radio connectors so unless you are an advanced do it tyourselfer then a professional installation is probably for the best.
