i think i screwed up my tranny

Hello there new member and bmw owner. I just changed the tranny fluid in my 2005 bmw 325i. 5 speed tranny. i found out later that you don't need to change it for some reason. i put royal purpple high perfomence tranny fluid in. now in 1st through 3rd gear it makes a whineing sound. doe's anyone know if i put the wrong stuff in and what should i do about it. can anyone out there please help me

Well to start, the whole no changing the transmission fluid myth is just that. How many miles are on the gear box?

5 speed auto or manual? Auto trans requires 8 liters of ATF fluid, not sure on the manual.......though

its a manual 5 speed trans. has 71500 + or - a few.

the trans reservoir cap says atf only so im a little confussed.

Your confused....a manual box does not take ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid)

From the diagram in the link the fill and drain plugs are on the box #5, normally only auto boxes have a reservoir and most BMW's dont have a res and have to be serviced via the fill/drain plugs, I would think you are filling the power steering....

i didnt fill the power steering res. i filled it through the dip stick tube. any reason why its making the whineing noise.

Fluid level to low, I will do some more investigation as I didnt know they had a gearbox dipstick....

You may have the wrong fluid in:

From model year 2004 some manual transmissions are filled with Castrol “MTF-LT-2” lifetime fluid. This fluid has the
same properties as the “MTF-LT-1”

The “MTF-LT-1” fluid may be mixed and/or
substituted for the “MTF-LT-2” manual transmission fluid.

Marti is correct, there is no dipstick tube for either manual or automatic trans.......the engine dipstick is red & many people mistaken this as the transmission
filler tube.....If you drained your fluid from the trans, & filled the red dip stick filler with Royal Purple, then you just added Royal Purple to your engine, if you added it to the black star shaped round cap, then you added it to your power steering system.......& your trans is making noise, because it is running dry!

JB, thanks for the conformation, I thought I was going mad for a minute as I'm really a 7 series man, but know quite a lot about all models and thanks for you link inpost re: manual box fill above which confirms my post#7...cheers.

oldman....you have been running your box with no fluid.....!!, you need to follow instrutions in JB's link if it whines after that youve done damage, if no whine youve taken minimum 10-20k off its life....

thank you gentleman for all your help. it has stoped whining and still shifts smooth. one more thing since i put trans fulid in the enginewill it mess it up. i alresdy changed it.

You are welcome, It won't mess up your engine as long as you drained the oil out while the engine was warmed up.......to thin it out, so it drains well!
